Which primer is best for your skin type and budget?

I love a good primer! Nothing beats the feeling of your make-up sitting perfectly on your face and lasting for hours. A decent primer will do all this and more. For me, primer is a huge part of my make-up applying routine and it's amazing how many different types there are out there! So much so, it can sometimes be a bit confusing which is best for you. As there are lots of primers around, the prices range dramatically. So, is it worth spending that little bit more? I've compared a few of my favourites with very different price points and benefits to see which is best for your skin type and price point!

In the spotlight are: Benefit - that gal, Makeup Revolution - Ultra Face Base Primer, Laura Mercier - Foundation Primer, Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer, GOSH prime'n set primer & mattifying setting powder, MAC prep + prime skin base visage, Wild about Beauty - Botanical Skin Prep Serum and finally, Benefit - POREfessional.

Best on a Budget - Makeup Revolution Ultra Face Base Primer - £5 for 25ml
This is a clear gel formula and applies like a silky layer of loveliness to the skin. The smallest amount goes a long way and blends quickly leaving a completely matte finish. I find this lasts easily for 5-6 hours with limited touch ups needed on an average day. For £5 you honestly can't go wrong and it's hard to tell the difference between this and other more expensive gel primers as it can outperform some of the best!
'The perfect base under your foundation. It smoothes out the skin to create an even canvas so your foundation is flawless and lasts all day!'
Best Splurge Spend - Benefit "that gal" - £22.50 for 11ml
Pricey, pricey, pricey. It might seem mid-range but you only get 11ml which is approximately less than half of the amount of primer you get compared to other brands. However, the pink liquid applies well into the skin and absorbs quickly. The scent which to me smells very much like strawberries is an added bonus! This lasts hours for me and is the only primer I can go all day without having to do any reapplying which I presume is down to the formulation! Therefore, it is worth the price tag if you need a long-wearing primer or you don't use a primer that often and want something special. I would LOVE if Benefit increased the size of "that gal" for all of us out there that use primer everyday! It's one of my favourites but its price point for the amount you get is too much for many.

'Contains light-reflecting pigments to help brighten all skin tones and raspberry & camomile to soothe skin.'

Best for Large Pores - Benefit POREfessional - £24.50 for 22ml
Benefit POREfessional is a thicker balm-like formula which applies fairly thickly onto the skin and can be a little more difficult to spread. Therefore, it isn't the best primer if you prefer a lighter finish. However, it's silky feel is a pleasure to the skin and leaves a matte finish too. In my opinion, I much prefer just dabbing this on after using another primer to areas where I need to minimise my pores or blending a small amount with another primer. I can also visibly see my pores have been reduced by this little miracle and as I don't use it all over my face, it lasts! If used alone as a primer I find the thickness of the consistency affects the way my make-up applies and this in turn affects how long my make-up lasts, leading to more regular touch ups throughout the day.
'Quickly minimise the appearance of pores & fine lines for smoother-than-smooth skin! Translucent, oil-free formula complements all skintones and helps makeup stay put. Contains a Vitamin E derivative, known to protect skin from free radicals.'

Best All Rounder - Laura Mercier Foundation Primer - £29 for 50ml
If I was going to pick a favourite, this primer would definitely come out on top! A small amount spreads across the face like a dream and the creamy gel formula spreads very much like a lightweight moisturiser. This makes application incredibly easy and leaves a flawless finish. The consistency is similar to the Benefit 'that gal' formula but less is needed. For me, this primer is a complete all-rounder as it suits most skin types due to its moisturising qualities and leaves a dewy finish if you are having a make-up free day! Laura Mercier also has a hydrating primer in its range that is perfect for those with dry skin as it helps maintain moisture during the day. This lasts a good 6-8 hours for me with only the odd powder needed which is great if you have busy days! A fair price for a higher end brand with the luminous formula to match. I love how this sleek little tube can keep my make-up in place like I've only just applied it hours on!

'A buffer against external aggressors, the gel contains vitamins A, C and E that act as antioxidants to protect the skin from harmful, aging effects of the environment. This...will never clog your pores.'
Best Silicone Free - Wild About Beauty Botanical Skin Prep Serum - £22 for 30ml
A lovely moisturiser-type formula that spreads easily across the face. Its creamy texture sinks in to the skin easily and leaves the perfect base for make-up. Being silicone free, this primer is less likely to irritate your skin and cause breakouts. It contains Green Caviar Extract which helps provide hydration and can aid the firming of the skin. It does exactly as it states and is incredibly nourishing and is definitely one of my favourites!

'Packed with amazing skin care ingredients such as Green Caviar Extract, this silicone free serum will rejuvenate and nourish the skin whilst simultaneously priming your complexion to ensure make-up goes on smoothly and really lasts.'

Best for long wear and dry skin - Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer - £25.50 for 30ml
Smashbox's primer is a cult classic and is one of the most popular in its field. A clear gel which applies very much like Makeup Revolution's primer. It leaves a matte finish and settles in to the skin on application. This provides an even coverage and even though its a gel formula, I still find it moisturising. It spreads easily and a little goes a long way. Smashbox also do a hydrating primer just like Laura Mercier which is great for dry skin too.
A 'silky, lightweight blend of vitamins A and E, grape seed extract and green tea. Our best-selling primer helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and pores for flawless skin with a velvety-smooth finish. Oil-free!'

Best for promoting even skin tone - MAC Prep + Prime Skin Base Visage - £21 for 30ml
Prep + Prime is a great primer for adding radiance as it has a lovely shimmery finish. However, this shimmer isn't great if you prefer a flat matte base. As it contains silicone it promotes a flawless base as it fills in all of the little lines on your face. The formula is creamy and easy to apply. This lasts all day for me and is great for preventing redness and promoting an even canvas for your make-up.

'An ultra-fluid lotion formulated with special-effect silicones. Calms and soothes the skin, blots away excess oil, and evens out skin redness. Improves the laydown and application of foundation or powder.'

Best powder primer and best for oily skin - GOSH prime'n set primer & mattifying setting powder - £9.99 for 7g
A fine white powder which is probably the easiest to master, especially for beginners. The primer just applies like a normal facial powder so it has excellent coverage. It creates a matte finish and sits perfectly on the face. It's a great base for foundation. This is definitely the best option if you aren't keen on creamy primers. This primer is just as long-lasting as liquid primer alternatives and can also be used on top of foundation to create an airbrushed effect that keeps make-up in place and controls shine.

'Transforms skin by visually minimising pores, fine lines, redness and imperfections. The silky loose powder creates a flawless, matte finish and comes in a clever pot with a sieve and a closing mechanism that stops the powder from spilling out into lid.'

Phew - sorry if this is a bit long but I love my primers! Is there a primer you can't live without?
